This is a no-nonsense drink, due to the utilization of sheared rye, which concentrates the grain’s flavors during fermentation. Today, there are few traditional ryes with a legacy and flavor profile so true to America’s heritage. The consumers of the day wanted an uncomplicated, strong, spicy and hearty rye. The lifestyle and palate of America in the 1750s was far more rustic than it is today, and life itself more brutal and challenging. Legend has it that the recipe for Michter’s Straight Rye dates back to 1753. Upon pouring you’ll encounter earthy notes of charred applewood and rye spice and on the palate candied berries, fig jam and fruit cake melding into a smooth, complex flavor that sets it apart from the pepper-forward flavor profile found in many ryes. This Double Platinum winner of Best Craft Rye at the 2022 ASCOT Awards international spirits competition has a mash bill of 100% Winter Cereal Rye - all grown and harvested on-site at Frey Ranch - and is aged in #4 char barrels and capped with #3 char heads. In the case of Frey Ranch, all of the grains are grown on the distillery’s farm and water is derived from the Lake Tahoe watershed, warranting the slogan: “From Ground to Glass.” The Frey family has been farming in Fallon, Nevada (near Reno) since 1854, and after the decision was made to use its crops for distilled spirits, in 2010 the Frey Ranch Estate Distillery was born. Very few distillers can claim to produce, malt and ferment every ingredient that goes into the bottle.
